Here's how to import rides into calimoto!
GPX, short for GPS Exchange Format, is the go-to language for many navigation systems and devices. It is an open file format for storing geo-data for rides. calimoto recognizes and processes uploaded GPX files to optimally display the rides with the appropriate file types.
GPX Import
You can import GPX files via the Android app, the iOS app, and our website.
Android:
- Open the "Rides" view
- Tap on "Planned"
- Tap on the 3-dot menu in the top right corner
- Select "Import GPX"
- Choose the downloaded file to open the tour on the calimoto map
iOS:
- Download the GPX file you would like to work with and open it
- Select calimoto as the app to open the file
- The file will open as a ride on the map
Website:
- Open the Trip Planner on the website (don't forget to log in 😉)
- Click the GPX Import button (it's the one with the upward arrow next to the settings)
- Choose whether you want to import the ride as planned or completed
- Use drag & drop to move the file(s) into the upload space, or opt for a traditional upload. You can upload up to 50 files with a total size of 1 GB
- Confirm by clicking "Import now"
- Tada! After the upload, you can view your imported files under My Rides

calimoto does its best to make your ride smooth, but GPX is an open file format, and we unfortunately cannot rule out the possibility of deviations from the original ride during import. You can find more information in our blog.

GPX Export
You can export GPX files via the Android app, the iOS app, and our website.
Android:
- Head to the Rides view, and then onto Planned, Completed, or Shared with me to find the ride you would like to export
- Tap on the ride you would like to export to open the preview
- Tap on the 3-dot menu in the top right corner
- Select the option "Export GPX"
- Select the location to save the file on your device and confirm the choice
iOS:
- Head to the Rides view, and then onto Planned, Completed, or Shared with me to find the ride you would like to export
- Tap the three-dot menu at the bottom right of the tour
- Tap "Export file …"
- Select the export format and then the location, and confirm with "Move"
Website:
- Open the Trip Planner on our website
- Open a saved or recently planned ride on the map
- Click on the red "Export data" button on the lower right side of the menu
- Select the export format

It’s vague and unhelpful. There are GPX standards and versions of those. Say which you support.
GPX can be route, track or both. What do you support?
My experience is that when trying to import a v1.1 route, track and POI GPX is that calimoto will say that it could not import the GPX. Then it will display it on the map.
But if I then try to navigate, it calculates a route. So presumably it’s ignoring the track and using the POIs only. This is not clear at all.
The end result is that it LOOKS like Calimoto has imported the track and looking at the route on the map may look good. But the actual route it then navigates could be very different as it will also keep recalculating for “twisties” thereby erasing any benefit of a preplanned route.
Of course your raison d’être then steps in and tries to find “twisty” alternatives to a route I’ve already carefully planned - and buggers it all up.
Agreed. I just subscribed after hearing good things and tried to import a previously recorded GPX, but because it contained "off-road" sections Calimoto recalculates it and it becomes completely unusable. I couldn't find any options to adjust the behaviour and I ended up here. Disappointed. Should've done my homework first.
