Our unique algorithm is designed to calculate the most scenic routes based on a variety of different factors.
These include aspects like the curviness of the roads, the level of urbanization, the condition of the road surface, and many other parameters. A key player in this is our Calimeter — a helpful tool that shows the curve intensity of a route directly during the planning process. Additionally, we use geodata, primarily sourced from the extensive OpenStreetMap database, as well as other reliable sources. We extensively process and refine this geospatial data to generate our own high-quality mapping material.
This approach allows us to visually highlight particularly winding routes, ensuring that our algorithm can always find the optimal route for you. By doing so, we make sure that your rides are not only safe but also exciting, allowing you to always enjoy the best possible riding experience.

I wish we could filter the Twisty Roads for minimum length, because sometimes the "twisty" bit is just a short boring road with a u-turn, or maybe a quick diversion to a roundabout! The real twisty roads should be minimum of several (5-10) km in length, and this would filter out many of the too-short not really twisty roads.
I wish we could bypass this all together when you simply find the fastest route

We can definitely see how excluding very short “twisty” sections could make routes feel more natural and avoid unnecessary detours. I’ll gladly add your feedback to our internal collection so the team can consider it for future improvements.

If you’re looking to get from A to B as quickly as possible, you don’t need to use one of the winding routing profiles. When planning your route, simply tap the current routing profile (for example, “Winding”) and switch it to “Fastest” or “Fastest without Highways.”

Does Calimoto avoid single lane roads on purpose or is this only a thing in Belgium?
The navigation, even in super bendy mode, lets me do a rather boring straight road detour, and not the nice bendy "Grote Hazewindstraat"... (Hooglede, Belgium)
This happens all the time when planning routes around my home. When i make a specific route, I have to add a lot of viapoints to keep it from going to the big main roads...
Other than that, I love the app! It works much better in France and Germany.

Can the algorithm be tweaked to reflect that the twisty route is often through multiple villages which increasingly have 20mph speed limits? If it accounted for an element of mandatory speed limits then I would be more inclined to trust the routing not to take me through a dozen slow, heavily trafficked, but technically "twisty" villages and roads.

I promise we’re much quicker during the off-season! 😊 This was actually a fun question to look into, and it’s a great one to answer here in the Help Center since other riders might be wondering about similar situations and roads.
I had a look at the two roads in your screenshot, and both are classified as “unclassified” in OpenStreetMap, which is where calimoto gets its map data from. They aren’t excluded from navigation, but because calimoto’s routing algorithm is designed to find enjoyable motorcycle routes, those roads don’t always receive the highest priority, even if they would make the route a little shorter.
If you’d specifically like to ride one of those roads, simply placing a via point on it should work without any problems. The route will then happily take you through it.
However, it is a little surprising that they aren’t chosen even when selecting the fastest route, so thanks for pointing that out. We’ll pass your feedback along to our Product team as well.
