GPX Data Types

GPX stands for GPS Exchange Format — a widely used file format for GPS navigation systems and devices. It’s an open format for storing geographic data related to routes, and while calimoto supports it, we did not develop it.

A GPX file can contain three main types of location data:

1. Track points — track

Track points are actual GPS data recorded during an activity by a device or app. They accurately document your exact route and often include extra details like timestamps and elevation.

2. Route points — route

Route points are pre-planned points that define the ideal path for a ride. These guide you along a specific route and are primarily used for navigation.

3. Waypoints — waypoint

Waypoints are user-defined markers for specific locations — like start, end, or via points on your route.

How GPX data affects your ride calculation

The way your ride is processed depends on the type of data in the GPX file. Track points provide a detailed log of your ride, route points are necessary for navigation, and waypoints help with orientation and planning.

Some GPX files may also contain manufacturer-specific data with additional details, but the core structure remains the same.
