Why Can’t I Plan Routes Over 3000 km (1,860 mi)?

So, you've got this exciting trip in mind, spanning over an impressive 3000 kilometers? While we absolutely admire your passion for those long journeys, unfortunately, we have to break it to you – due to technical limitations, planning or saving routes longer than 3000 kilometers on calimoto is not currently possible.

Why is this the case?

There are a few reasons behind this restriction. Firstly, breaking long routes into shorter segments ensures better loading times, smoother route recalculations, and overall improved app performance. This helps to maintain the enjoyment of riding during shorter trips without overloading the app. Plus, let's be real, not many riders clock in over 3000 kilometers in one go.

Our recommendation:

For grander journeys, we suggest splitting your trip into multiple stages. Break your adventure down into manageable stages. Plan each leg separately, covering the distance you fancy for that particular day. It's like creating your own biker saga, and the app stays agile and efficient.

  • Hey @Tragonfly - thanks for your question!

At the moment, I’m not aware of any planned changes to the current 3000 km limit. However, I’m happy to pass your feedback along to the product team.

The more often we hear requests around a specific feature or limitation, the more likely it is that it will receive a closer look in future discussions.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know 👍!

    Ride safe! ✌️

  • Any tehnical explanation why the limit exists? I curious...

  • Good question @Tragonfly - the limit mainly exists for performance and stability reasons. Very long routes require significantly more route points, map data, calculations, and recalculations than shorter tours. This affects not only the initial route planning, but also saving, loading, editing, syncing between devices, and recalculating the route if something changes along the way.

By keeping routes below 3000 km, calimoto can ensure more consistent performance across a wide range of devices and avoid situations where extremely large routes become slow to load, difficult to edit, or less reliable during navigation.

Of course, we understand that some riders do indeed plan much longer adventures, so thanks for raising the question!

  • Thx for the fast reply. As Samsung S26 Ultra user, a very powerful device, maybe just add toggle within settings to enable longer routes with some kind of notification or alert, might cause issues... 🤔 😀

Anyway, thx and wish you all the best.
