You’re eagerly planning your next motorcycle trip, and suddenly the road is closed?
That can be pretty frustrating and really dampen the joy of the ride. To help you avoid these surprises in the future, we’ve added a new feature:
Starting now, road closures and restricted routes are shown directly on the map: clear, concise, and exactly where you need them.
In this article, you’ll learn how to easily spot closures on the map, what additional information is shown, and how you can customize the display to suit your needs.
🆕 What's new?
From now on, the calimoto app displays road closures directly on the map as points of interest (POIs).
This way, you can see during planning which roads are closed or only partially passable, and adjust your route accordingly.
🗺️ Which closures are shown now?
The app distinguishes between two types of closures:
⛔ Closed roads
Data source: TomTom
Briefly explained: Roads that are currently closed due to construction or other reasons are clearly marked on the map. This allows you to spot closed sections at a glance and easily avoid them when planning your route.
Note: This information is updated several times a day, so you can plan with confidence – without any unwelcome surprises along the way.
⚠️ Restricted roads
Data source: OpenStreetMap (OSM)
Briefly explained: These roads are subject to time-based or situational restrictions – for example, they are only drivable at certain times of day or closed to motorcycles.
Note: This information is provided by the OpenStreetMap community and is not updated in real time. If you notice incorrect or missing information, it needs to be updated directly in OSM before it can appear in calimoto.
🛠️ How to use the feature
⛔ Automatically avoid closed roads
- Create a (round) trip or open an existing tour
- Tap the three-dot menu in the bottom-right corner.
- Select "Route settings"
- Under Advanced settings, you can turn “Avoid closed roads during planning” on or off.
Important:
- When you start navigation, we automatically check your planned route for closures. If any new or more recent closures have been added since you planned your tour, we’ll offer you a suggested detour.
- Closures are only considered for your direction of travel. This means it may look like a closure is on your route when, in fact, it only applies to the opposite lane and therefore doesn’t affect your navigation.
Show or hide closures:
- Go to the map view.
- Open “Map settings” using the map icon in the bottom-right corner.
- In the “Road closures & restrictions” section, you’ll find two new options:
-
Restricted Roads
Closed at certain times or under certain conditions (OSM) -
Closed roads
Completely closed and not accessible, either permanently or for an extended period (TomTom)
-
Restricted Roads
- Use the toggle to turn the desired option on or off.
View a closure on the map
- Tap the corresponding POI icon.
- A details window will open, showing information such as the type of closure, the duration, and the data source.
Good to know:
The display of road closures is enabled by default.
You can change this at any time in "Map settings."
The “Avoid closed roads during planning” setting is turned off by default and needs to be activated each time you plan a new route.
This feature is being rolled out in the apps first, so it’s not yet available in the Trip Planner on our website.
Comments
I have not found some of the points mentioend above. For example how to remove the blocked roads from the map view in the planner window. Here in HongKong many roads are blocked for L license riders so basically the whole map is covered with blocked roads icons and i cannot remove them. Have a look at the picture below.
Thank you
Hi @MichaelHk,
Great question and thanks a lot for the screenshot. That looks a bit like my hometown Berlin where the map sometimes turns entirely red with all the construction zones.
You’re right, while the restricted roads layer can be turned off in the apps, this option unfortunately isn’t available on the website. I really appreciate you pointing this out and will definitely pass it along to our team. The more users bring this up, the more it moves up on our priority list.
That said, you can still plan on those roads. You can place your starting point or destination directly on them. And if it seems like the algorithm is avoiding them, adding a few via points right on the blocked sections should help force the route through.
Thanks again for your feedback and safe riding!
